Position: Editor-in-Chief

Location: Sinjar (with potential travel to Nineveh Plain / Mosul)

Contract: Full-time – six-month renewable contract

About the Project:

House of Coexistence, in collaboration with Hand for Hand, is launching an independent media platform in Sinjar and the Nineveh Plain called Helin Voices. The platform aims to promote cultural, artistic, intellectual, and social exchange, focus on community issues, public affairs, and minority rights, while emphasizing human rights principles and empowering youth, women, and marginalized groups to strengthen social cohesion in Sinjar and the wider Nineveh region.

Responsibilities:

  • Define the editorial vision and overall strategy for Helin Voices.
  • Lead the newsroom, assigning tasks to journalists, editors, and contributors.
  • Oversee content production (articles, reports, radio, podcasts, talk shows).
  • Ensure all content meets professional and ethical standards, avoiding hate speech or incitement.
  • Review quality of texts, audio, and video before publication or broadcast.
  • Train and develop the skills of the journalistic team and field reporters.
  • Expand a network of reporters and writers across Sinjar and the Nineveh Plain.
  • Participate in planning special programs and community media events.
  • Represent the project to partners, authorities, and media outlets.
  • Coordinate with administrative and financial staff to ensure smooth operations.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • University degree in journalism, media, literature, or a related field.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience in editorial work or newsroom management.
  • High proficiency in writing and editing in Arabic and Kurdish-Kurmanji (English fluency is a strong advantage).
  • Experience supervising teams and managing media projects or newsrooms.
  • Strong understanding of human rights, coexistence, and minority issues in Iraq and the region.
  • Ability to make sound editorial decisions under complex circumstances.
  • Proficiency in digital media tools and online publishing platforms.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with local radio or independent media platforms.
  • Ability to communicate in local minority languages (e.g., Syriac, Armenian, Turkmen, or Yazidi Kurdish).
  • Experience training young journalists or volunteers.
